Celebrating cultural diversity through community support in Newport
We’re proud to support organisations across Wales where diversity, inclusion and community connection are at the heart of their work every single day.
Recently, communities across the world marked World Day for Cultural Diversity – a celebration of the many cultures, experiences and identities that help shape our society.
One inspiring example is And Breathe, a parent carer group based in Bettws, Newport, supporting children with a wide range of disabilities and additional needs, alongside their families.
Creating inclusive spaces for families
Thanks to funding from our Caryl and Henry’s Bettws Fund, And Breathe has been able to host a variety of wellbeing and creative activities designed to support both children and their families.
Sessions have included journalling, crafting, knitting and other creative opportunities that encourage connection, confidence and self-expression in a welcoming and supportive environment.
For many of the children attending, these activities provide valuable opportunities to create friendships and feel part of a wider community. For families and parent carers, the group offers something equally important: understanding and connection with others who share similar experiences.
The ripple effect of community funding
One of the most powerful outcomes of the project has been the wider ripple effect created within the community.
The group shared that many parent carers who initially attended sessions for support have since become regular volunteers at the community centre. This demonstrates how relatively small amounts of funding can spark long-term community involvement.
By creating spaces where families feel welcomed and valued, organisations like And Breathe are helping to strengthen connected communities across Newport and beyond.
Why supporting diverse communities matters
The diversity of communities is one of Wales’s greatest strengths.
That is why we remain committed to supporting organisations that champion inclusion, accessibility and belonging through our funding programmes.
Grassroots groups like And Breathe play an essential role in ensuring families feel supported, represented and connected within their local communities. Their work highlights the importance of accessible, community-led spaces where everyone has the opportunity to participate and thrive.
We would like to thank And Breathe for the incredible difference they’re making to the lives of children and families across Newport.
We’re also grateful to the supporters of Caryl and Henry’s Bettws Fund, whose generosity has helped make this work possible.
