How small grants can create life-changing opportunities

When people think about philanthropy, it’s often the large-scale donations and major fundraising campaigns that come to mind. But relatively small amounts of funding can also have a transformative impact on someone’s future.

How small grants can create life-changing opportunities

Recently, we received an inspiring update from Ben, a student whose passion for geographical sciences has taken him all the way from University of Bristol to Greenland. Thanks to support from our North East Wales Science Fund, Ben was awarded £1,000 to support a four-week expedition to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland, where he collected data for his undergraduate dissertation while contributing to the NERC SLIDE Research Project at Isunnguata Sermia.

For Ben, the funding covered flights to and from Greenland – a cost that may otherwise have prevented the opportunity from becoming a reality.

Supporting the next generation of researchers

During his time in Greenland, Ben developed practical experience in a range of glaciological survey techniques, including:

  • Leica GNSS positioning systems
  • Geophones for seismological measurements
  • CryoEgg deployment and receiver servicing

Alongside this, he collected water and suspended sediment samples along the Watson and Akuliarusiarsuup Kuua rivers as part of his dissertation research, which focuses on glacial meltwater chemistry and silica concentrations across the proglacial environment.

The expedition not only contributed to his academic development but also strengthened his ambition to continue pursuing research within the field of glaciology.

Reflecting on the opportunity, Ben shared his gratitude to the organisations that helped make the experience possible, including Community Foundation Wales and our North East Wales Science Fund.

Why individual funding matters

Stories like Ben’s are a powerful reminder that philanthropy is not only about funding large organisations or major projects. Sometimes, targeted support for individuals can unlock opportunities that shape careers, fuel innovation and inspire future contributions to society.

A relatively small grant can help someone access education, undertake research, develop specialist skills or pursue opportunities that would otherwise remain out of reach.

For donors, this kind of giving offers a unique opportunity to invest directly in people, passions and potential.

The power of place-based philanthropy

Funds such as the North East Wales Science Fund demonstrate the importance of locally rooted philanthropy. By supporting individuals and projects connected to Wales, donors can help nurture talent, encourage learning and create opportunities that may have a lasting impact far beyond the initial grant itself.

Whether supporting community groups, students, researchers or grassroots initiatives, local philanthropy helps strengthen communities and invest in the future of Wales.

Supporting future opportunities

We would like to congratulate Ben on his incredible achievement and wish him every success as he continues his studies and future research in glaciology, inspired by this trip to Greenland.

We’re also deeply grateful to the donors and fundholders whose generosity makes opportunities like this possible.
