Transforming young lives

Fund for Wales

“This project has saved my life, seriously, I think I would be in prison or have been stabbed if I carried on the path I was going.”

Silk Futures CIC supports young people facing significant barriers in their lives. Providing access to creativity, particularly in music recording and performing, Silk Futures CIC offers a safe and nurturing environment where young individuals can thrive.

Thanks to a grant from the Fund for Wales, Silk Futures CIC has been able to hold weekly music sessions. These sessions are not just about making music; they are about creating opportunities. Participants engage in writing lyrics, exploring new music genres, and networking with peers and mentors. These activities build confidence, foster teamwork, and equip young people with new skills that extend far beyond the music studio.

Cameron’s journey

Cameron’s story shows the real impact of Silk Futures CIC. Referred by social services due to his disengagement from school and multiple arrests, Cameron was on a dangerous path and at risk of exploitation by his peers.

However, from his first individual writing session at Silk Futures CIC, Cameron found a new direction. Immersing himself in a community of like-minded, music-loving peers, he quickly became an integral part of the group.

Cameron spent a lot of his time writing lyrics and recording, discovering a passion for performance that opened new doors for him. His talent for music led him to perform with various organizations in Cardiff, and even in Wrexham and Portsmouth.

Since joining Silk Futures CIC, Cameron has avoided trouble and found a new lease of life. Silk Futures CIC facilitated his enrolment in a music course, and he is now pursuing a career in music and media at college.

Transforming Families and Futures

The impact of Silk Futures CIC extends beyond the individual participants to their families. Parents have witnessed remarkable transformations in their children’s behaviour and confidence.

One parent shared:

‘My 13 year old son isn’t in school at the moment and he’s on the child protection register but these sessions are helping him so much, he doesn’t miss one, every time he comes home he is buzzing and it’s making him stay on the right path, he’s a totally different kid from a year ago.’

Another parent echoed this sentiment, saying:

‘My son is always excited when he gets opportunities to perform his music, he has made better choices about his life since coming, having mentors to support him has made a huge difference.’
