“The little things can make all the difference” – Supporting Communities Through the Cost of Living Crisis

As communities continue to navigate the continued impact of the cost-of-living crisis, local organisations provide more than practical support – they are offering kindness and dignity.

As part of our efforts to support communities through this crisis, we provided grants with Newsquest Media Group through our Cost of Living Fund to community groups and initiatives, alleviating poverty across Wales.

One of the recipients of this funding was Ammanford Foodbank, who received £15,000 over a 3-year period, supporting the delivery of a help centre and a foodbank.

Over the funding period, the help centre opened its doors to members of the public every Monday and Friday, becoming a trusted and reliable source of support for local people facing financial difficulties.

More than just a foodbank

Whilst access to emergency food is a vital part of their service, the support they offer extends far beyond food provision.

Over the funding period, the help centre has supported more than 1,000 people to access the support they require, via referrals to other organisations, advice, food provisions and practical support filling out forms.

This has led to more than £840,000 in financial gains for people within the community, via income maximisation and access to additional support, which has helped reduce financial pressure.

Leading with kindness

One of the most striking aspects of the organisation is its constant commitment to evolving and one of the ways in which they’ve done this is by creating a welcoming and supportive environment.

Visitors are met by dedicated staff members on arrival, being offered a warm welcome and a hot drink.

To some, these may seem like small gestures. But for someone experiencing financial hardship, loneliness or uncertainty, these little things can make all the difference.

The feedback from visitors reflects this approach. People accessing the service have described the team as “brilliant”, “thoughtful” and “understanding”, highlighting the positive impact the organisation has had on their lives.

A pillar of the community

Over time, the help centre and foodbank have become far more than a place to access emergency support. They have become a trusted community hub where people know they will be welcomed, listened to and supported.

This is the power of community-led organisations. They understand the needs of local people and can provide practical help alongside the human connection that is often just as important.

Thank you

We’d like to extend our thanks to everyone involved with Ammanford Foodbank for the incredible work you continue to do.

Your dedication, compassion and commitment have helped hundreds of people to access support, improve their financial circumstances and feel less alone during challenging times.

Diolch yn fawr for everything you do for your community.
