Igniting a lifelong passion for women’s basketball

“Newport Aces is like another home to me. I’ve made so many great memories and friendships throughout the year.

“The funding has had massive impacts on individuals and the club as a whole. As someone with limited report writing experience, this process is very user friendly and straight forward to complete.”

With support from the Newport Community Endowment Fund, Newport Aces Basketball Club have begun building Newport’s first women’s competitive basketball team, delivering regular sessions for girls and women and developing their skills, fitness and confidence.

Girls and women in Newport historically have had few opportunities to engage in competitive basketball. Newport Aces set out to change that, empowering local players through engagement, teamwork and community. The £2,000 grant funded regular sessions for over 25 girls and 15 women, supporting their physical and mental wellbeing, and fostering a strong sense of being a team player. Two 13-year-old players have since trialled for the Wales national team; women balancing work and family now play competitively, growing in resilience and skills.

The project has established a route into basketball for local women and girls, where none existed before. It’s also trained volunteers in coaching and officiating, providing both career experience and paid opportunities.
