Community Foundation Wales is the chosen charity for Dwylo Dros y Môr 2020

35 years after the first ever Welsh language charity song Dwylo Dros y Môr (Hands Across The Sea) came out, a 2020 version of the song is being released and a share of the profits will go to Community Foundation Wales’ Coronavirus Resilience Fund.

Singer Elin Fflur, with the help of musician Owain Gruffudd Roberts, has brought together more than 30 Welsh artists from today’s music scene to create a new arrangement, Dwylo Dros y Môr 2020.

The new version of the song, originally composed by the singer Huw Chiswell, is available for download on all digital platforms on 11 December and the whole thing can be seen in a special programme, Dwylo Dros y Môr 2020, which will be broadcast on 27 December at 8pm.

Just as with the song 35 years ago, a share of the proceeds from the single will go to charity and, with the current Coronavirus pandemic continuing to affect Welsh lives, a charity closer to home has been selected – Community Foundation Wales.

The share of the proceeds from Dwylo Dros y Môr will go towards Community Foundation Wales’ Coronavirus Resilience Fund. This Fund has been supporting organisations across Wales throughout the Coronavirus pandemic, helping them to adapt their services and support those who need it the most.

Richard Williams, Chief Executive of Community Foundation Wales said:

“Community Foundation Wales is delighted to be the chosen charity for the 2020 version of Dwylo Dros y Môr. The release of this single is as important today as it was 35 years ago, especially as we are in the midst of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Our Coronavirus Resilience Fund has provided much needed financial aid to communities across Wales and we hope that the Welsh people will show their support and download the song so we can continue to help those who need it most.”

Singer Elin Fflur said:

“Originally, 35 years ago, the aim was to raise money for something that was happening on the other side of the world; but we’ve had a very different emergency this year.”

“2020 has been such a difficult year – Covid has affected every one of us, but there are some people in our communities who have been hit really hard because of the pandemic. And this is why Community Foundation Wales’ Coronavirus Resilience Fund is important; it works at the heart of our communities.

“I would encourage everybody to buy the song – we are still in the middle of the pandemic, so if we can help the cause by downloading a song, well we should go for it, shouldn’t we?! It would be a real bonus to see it reach the top of the charts!”
