Sometimes the Smallest Grants Leave the Biggest Legacy

When people think about charitable giving, it’s easy to assume that creating meaningful change requires significant amounts of money, and of course in some cases it does.

But sometimes, the biggest differences begin with the smallest investments.

Just ask Llay Church of the Nazarene in Wrexham, where a £1,000 grant transformed a local youth club and helped create a more positive environment for young people in the community.

A need for more opportunities

Every Friday evening, Llay Church of the Nazarene opens its doors to young people from the local area through its youth club.

The club provides a safe, welcoming space where children and teenagers can socialise, make friends and spend time together. However, the team was finding it increasingly difficult to keep young people engaged. With limited activities and equipment available, attendance and retention rates were low, placing additional pressure on volunteers and making it harder to deliver the sessions they envisioned.

At the same time, the village was experiencing high levels of antisocial behaviour among young people, much of which stemmed from boredom and a lack of accessible activities.

The church knew that if they could offer more opportunities for young people to spend time together positively, they could make a real difference.

A £1,000 Investment in young people

Through a £1,000 Wrexham Funds grant, the youth club was able to purchase new equipment, including video games, a pool table, board games and books for a lending library.

Importantly, the young people themselves were involved in deciding what equipment would be purchased. By asking the children what they wanted from their youth club, the church ensured the space reflected their interests and gave them a genuine voice in shaping activities within their community.

Attendance levels reached an all-time high, with more young people regularly attending sessions and staying engaged with the club. Volunteers were able to deliver a more enjoyable and varied programme, and the youth club became an even stronger community hub.

Creating lasting impact

The effects of the grant extended far beyond new games and equipment.

By providing a safe, welcoming place for young people to spend time together, the project has helped reduce antisocial behaviour in the local area and created opportunities for children and teenagers to build friendships, discover new hobbies and develop new interests.

It is a powerful reminder that modest, yet vital amounts of funding can create change that reaches far beyond the original investment.
