Reducing isolation and increasing creativity in Wrexham
Wrexham Welsh Church Act Fund (part of Wrexham Funds umbrella)
“The aim has been to create opportunities to connect with others – reducing feelings of isolation or exclusion, acquiring new skills…and just feeling better for being outside, in touch with nature and in the great outdoors.”
Thanks to funding from the Wrexham Welsh Church Act Fund, Action for Children in Wrexham has been delivering creative and therapeutic group sessions for children and young people facing emotional and social difficulties.
The children and young people supported by Action for Children often carry a lot – responsibilities as young carers, challenging family dynamics, mental health needs and school-related anxieties. Many were isolated or struggling to express themselves, with limited access to places where they could feel safe, valued, and heard.
With a £3,000 grant covering three years of activity, Action for Children has run 20 tailored group sessions focused on emotional wellbeing, creativity, and outdoor connection. Activities included smoothie-making, sewing, growing and harvesting food and group crafts.
One key addition was the purchase of a greenhouse, supporting regular horticultural therapy and offering young people a place to relax, focus, and feel accomplished. Therapeutic play sessions were also introduced, helping participants build social skills and self-esteem in a safe environment.
The project has helped young people feel more confident, less isolated and more in control of their emotions.
