Woodland skills and hands on training

“…I’ve learnt so much from everyone at Tir Coed, you really have a wonderful bunch of people on board. I am hopeful and excited to see what the next chapter brings. I am now employed managing a private garden, coppice woodland, meadow, vegetables, Polly Tunnels, market garden and floristry flowers…I get to use everything pretty much I learnt with Tir Coed. So chuffed!”

With £15,000 over three years from the Dr Dewi Davies Endowment Fund, Tir Coed has been able to continue delivering life-changing outdoor training across rural Ceredigion, equipping people with practical skills and confidence in sustainable land management work.

In rural communities, many people face isolation and long-term unemployment, especially those with additional challenges such as unpaid caring responsibilities or poor mental health.

With support from the fund, Tir Coed delivered multiple courses including introductory taster days, accredited 12 and 20-week woodland and horticulture programmes, and vocational licences in brush cutter use and first aid for forestry. All learners were supported by mentors and tutors, helping them build skills and explore future work or education.

Participants gained confidence, community and qualifications, ranging from Agored Cymru Level 2 awards to recognised outdoor work licences. Several trainees have moved into jobs or further study, including one who now works flexibly managing a private garden and woodland.
