Drama sessions build confidence in Denbigh

“As a young carer, this sort of opportunity gives her a chance to not be responsible…gives her a place to be herself, explore new opportunities, and take part in activities she normally wouldn’t have access to. Thank you to all who spend the time to make the sessions happen.”
Thanks to funding from the Educational Fund for Denbigh and Surrounding Areas, The Denbigh Workshop’s Saturday Youth Theatre programme is helping young carers reconnect with themselves and others. Through professional-led drama, workshops, and performances, participants have gained skills, friendships and confidence.
For many local young carers, who balance daily responsibilities at home, there are few opportunities to express themselves. The Denbigh Workshop, a community arts charity, works with people across Denbigh and the surrounding area to create inclusive, transformative arts experiences.
With multi-year support from the fund, The Denbigh Workshop enabled young carers to work with professional actors from television and theatre, as well as renowned recording studios. Participants explored drama, circus skills, puppetry, cheerleading, and crafts. They took part in masterclasses from visiting artists like Gillian Hardie and Chris Parle, received an Explore Arts Award, and performed alongside West End performers and the Denbigh Community Choir.
The impact has been fantastic. Young carers gained new skills and deepened their self-esteem in a safe, supportive environment. One participant, who wants to follow a career in circus performance, learned one on one from professional acrobats. Others discovered their voice through dance, puppetry, or simply by making new friends. Importantly, they found a space that was just for them, getting a vital break from the demands of life at home.
