Improving opportunities for young people with dyslexia

Fund for Wales

“Dyslexia Club is great, like being part of an extended family. Spending time with others who are like me and understand what it feels like, gives me confidence.”

Dyslexia Club Swansea supports young people with dyslexia who live in Swansea, providing bespoke opportunities to enhance their self-confidence, self-belief and self-esteem.

They received a grant towards the cost of providing a welcoming, safe and appropriately adapted and delivered weekly club for children with dyslexia. Many of the children attending the sessions would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet one another and relate to other dyslexic young people who face similar challenges to themselves. The young people often say that this is what they value the most about the sessions.

One parent of a child who attends the club said:

“My son has attended since the beginning and seeing him grow in confidence and ability due to the activities and events undertaken at Swansea Dyslexia Club has been amazing.

My son says how amazing it is to be part of an extended “family” surrounded by people who understand how he feels. Watching his confidence grow in Crazy Climb when he was scared to climb higher but encouraged by his peers helped him believe in himself and what he can achieve.

Swansea Dyslexia Club provides them all with the opportunity to do things amongst people who understand, and all support each other.”

Tina co-founded Dyslexia Club Swansea as she has personal experience of the challenges faced by young people:

“Having two dyslexic children, I realised that school can be a challenge and a struggle. I thought a club where they could have fun and explore trying out activities they haven’t done before, and find they are good at, would be a great way to improve their self-esteem and confidence.”
