A growing space for learning and community

“The allotment has proven to be a small oasis in the centre of our urban landscape and works sympathetically with the establishment of our Community Woodland, which has just been awarded National Forest Status…the first school in Wales to achieve this! None of these initiatives would be possible without the support we receive from organisations such as yourselves.”

Thanks to funding from the Cardiff and Vale Schools Fund, a primary school in one of Wales’ most disadvantaged areas transformed its humble allotment into a thriving, inclusive outdoor learning hub. The space supports children, families, and the wider community, bringing people together, building confidence, and nurturing a deeper connection to nature.

Oakfield Primary School sits in Gibbonsdown, Barry, one of the top 10% most deprived areas in Wales. Educational attainment is often low, and opportunities for families are limited. Despite these challenges, the school has long focused on inclusivity and community support, already running initiatives like the Big Bocs Bwyd – its “pay as you feel” playground supermarket.

With support from the Cardiff and Vale Schools Fund, Oakfield Primary School was able to revitalise its allotment space. The grant enabled the team to purchase wood and materials for raised beds, gardening tools, soil, seeds, and safety features like handrails and path substrates.

The allotment is now a lively and much-loved part of school life. Children of all ages and their families learn how to grow food, cook meals, and care for the environment. The produce supports school cooking sessions and stocks the Big Bocs Bwyd. More importantly, the allotment has sparked a wave of community involvement. Parents who once felt isolated now volunteer, run a café, and take steps toward education and employment. One group of mums, inspired by their involvement, recently signed up for college courses, helping them build skills and better support their children.
